We know it is unacceptable yet we still allow people in the service industry to treat customers like absolute crap. In restaurants we are too scared to complain because we do not want the staff to spit in our food or worse… I know that there are some difficult customers out there, but not everyone is like that and just because you decide you do not like the look of someone does not mean that should go out of your way to be rude to them, especially if you are in the service industry. Not everyone is capable of working in the service industry and the reason we have to deal with rude, snotty and abrasive people is because they are just there for the money at the end of the month. I can appreciate that we cannot all do what we love, but if you are going to be in a customer facing role at least try to be a nice person and learn to take a certain amount of shit from people.
I wish there was a way to do something about poor service and offering incentives is the only realistic approach that comes to mind. If you have a grand prize at the end of each month that your employees can work towards it means that their hard work will be rewarded if they make the effort. We all know that being in the service industry is no picnic, but then you meet some people who make it seem as though it is the easiest and breeziest job ever. Those are the people who need to be rewarded because at the end of the day they are the reason your customers will keep coming back to you.
It seems that I am not the only one who feels that the service industry in South Africa is lacking. From messed up reservations to staff thinking customers care to endure their humorous side it seems that there is a lot of room for improvement, but if the managers and business owners do not care to train their staff and reward and reprimand staff accordingly then complaining is as effective as pissing in to the wind.
