There are probably quite a number of people who are struggling to make it to the end of January after having an epic December holiday. I could have done with better budgeting, because you forget just how far away pay-day is when you get paid early in December. I do not blame people for enjoying their time off from work, but this is a good wake-up call with regards to saving. Saving should be something that you do automatically. Your savings should be another debit order that is deducted from your salary at the beginning of every month in to an account where you cannot access the money immediately. You do not have to save half your salary, you just need to save a realistic percentage of it. That way if you ever really want anything or want to go away on holiday you have some sort of savings to use and you do not have to start from scratch with saving up some money every time.
There are quite a few people who live from month to month and that may suit you for now, but it is not very practical. It is also not easy to feel sorry for people who do not save some money because when they hit hard times the only person they can blame is.. well, them. You often hear people saying that they cannot afford to put any money away yet they can afford little luxuries and hitting the town weekend after weekend. No one is trying to take away your social life or stop you from spoiling yourself every now and again it is just about being a bit more realistic about your future. If all you can afford to put away every month is R200 then so be it. Without even taking the interest you could gain on it in to consideration that is R2400 that you would have managed to save in a year. You have to start somewhere and you have to start saving at some point.
Seeing as though it is January maybe you want to go and open a separate savings account that you can deposit a percentage of your monthly income in to. Do not fool yourself in to believing that you will save whatever money you have left over at the end of the month, because if it is there you will find a way to spend it. If you put it away at the beginning of the month you remove all temptation to spend it and you can budget on whatever you have left.
